History of the John Paul II Upper Silesian Child Health Centre in Katowice

The Independent Public Clinical Hospital no. 6 of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, John Paul II Upper Silesian Child Health Centre is a hospital entirely dedicated to children and their health problems. The hospital has been operating since 1994, when the first Magnetic Resonance Laboratory in the south of Poland was opened. On 29 May 1999 an official opening ceremony of the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre took place, after over 30 years of the development of a concept for the establishment of a specialist hospital for children from our region. At that time only the so-called “low part” of the hospital was in operation. The “upper part” of the building was made available in 2000, when a ten-storey main building, in which the hospital departments and clinics are located nowadays, was opened.

The following organizational units were transfered to the hospital from the Medical Academy of Silesia:

  • Developmental Neurology Clinic
  • Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Clinic
  • Pediatrics Clinic
  • Neonatal Intensive Care and Pathology Clinic
  • Pediatric Surgery Clinic
  • Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Clinic
  • Pediatric Cardiology Clinic

Additionally, the following departments were established:

  • ENT Department
  • Hospital Emergency Department

The remaining part of the hospital was occupied by:

  • Diagnostic Imaging Laboratory
  • Hospital Pharmacy
  • Analytical Laboratory
  • Complex of Specialist Outpatient Centres

Currently the Centre provides medical care for the developmental age population, offering outpatient medical advice in 30 specialist outpatient centres and conducting in-patient diagnostics and therapy in 16 hospital departments. In emergency situations a professional assistance is provided by one of two Pediatric Hospital Emergency Departments in the region. Each year nearly 17 thousand in-patients are admitted to the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre. The hospital provides 80 thousand specialist outpatient medical advice and 17 thousand medical services in the Hospital Emergency Department.

Highly qualified specialists

The staff members of the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre in Katowice are highly qualified specialists who perform specialized and sometimes even unique procedures. As a result, an opinion on the excellent quality of the treatment and medical care provided by the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre has already spread outside Poland and more and more foreign patients want to be treated in our hospital.

In 2009 the Centre was awarded the ISO 9001:2009 certificate and the Clean Hospital Certificate.

Child-Friendly Hospital

We operate in accordance with the European Charter for Children in Hospital, promulgating the idea of a “Child-Friendly Hospital”, among others, through:

  • minimizing the hospitalization-related stress
  • allowing the carers to stay in the hospital together with the child for 24 hours a day
  • providing decent conditions of stay and adjusting the hospital space to the needs of the children and their carers
  • offering the possibility to continue education in the hospital school, to attend the pre-school, day-care room and computer classes, and to use the library resources
  • offering the possibility of an easy phone contact, through payphones located in the hospital department halls (“Phone call to mummy”)
  • providing psychological care and involving the clinical psychologists in the diagnosis and treatment of certain health problems.

Scientific- research activity carried out by the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre

The Centre which is the clinical hospital of the Medical University of Silesia offers a comprehensive pre-diploma training programme for Polish and foreign students, which is based on a wide knowledge of the patients at developmental age. We had met the demanding requirements imposed on facilities of this type, which allowed us to obtain a positive assessment of the national accreditation committee and American accreditation committee. For many years the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre has been an educational base for the students of the Medical University of Silesia and other state and international universities teaching medical subjects in Polish and English. The majority of our departments have been given approval to conduct postgraduate training (both specialized and partial one). The hospital also organizes all-Polish and regional courses and trainings for medical doctors and nurses.

Continual improvement process

In the area around the hospital one can find a landing platform for medical helicopters. The Upper Silesian Child Health Centre is situated in a beautiful district of Katowice, on the outskirts of a forest.
